The Valiant 50 is a proven bluewater cruising sailboat with numerous circumnavigations to her credit. The hand laid solid fiberglass hull with high density structural foam stringers is massively strong, which is further enhanced by the fact that all bulkheads and furniture is bonded directly to the hull, has earned the reputation of being “over-built.”

Volvamus was the first Valiant 50 to be built at the Texas factory and is still owned by her original owner. However, there is a time a place for everything and the owner is now needing to spend more time on land based activities. The owner did a significant amount of work on the boat over the years and mainly sailed it seasonally in New England waters. As such, there are remarkably few hours on the engine (only 305 hours).

ACCOMODATIONS

The forward master cabin features a large V-berth with two drawers at the foot of the berth, a hanging locker, and numerous additonal storage lockers. There is also a ensuite head in the forward cabin. Moving aft is the salon which has long straight settees on both the port and straboard which make excellent sea berths when needed, or provide seating for 6 around the large fold up salon table. Next is the U-Shaped galley to port featuring a 4 burner stove with oven, abundant storage, large galley sink, slide out trash bin, well insulated icebox with SeaFrost refrigeration. Across from the galley is the forward facing nav station and electrical panel. Moving aft is the large pantry which will be appreciated by any cook. Next on the starboard side is the aft head which features a seperate shower stall and access to the engine room. Across from the head is the aft cabin with a double berth, hanging locker, and drawers beneath the berth.

Construction

Gelcoat: Isophthalic gelcoat used exclusively on all large and small fiberglass parts.

Resin: Isophthalic resin used throughout the entire lay up of hull, deck, and all other fiberglass components. The resin is hand-batched and catalyzed in one gallon increments. The catalyst/resin mixture is dyed to achieve the proper wet-out technique.

Hull: One piece, solid fiberglass, hand laminated of alternate layers of mat and woven roving.

Deck: Hand laminated, balsa cored fiberglass for strength weight ratio with high-density structural foam in high-stress areas.

Rub Rail: Molded in structural with sacrificial teak and stainless strake.

Rudder: Fiberglass hand-laminated exterior structural parts, solid stainless steel rudder shaft welded to an internal steel core, encased in resin and foam.

Skeg: Fiberglass hand-laminated exterior structural parts with internal steel weldment encased in resin and foam. Skeg is glassed to hull and through-bolted with 10 stainless steel bolts with a one-piece stainless steel backing plate bedded with 3M 5200.

Keel: External mounted lead ballast, bedded with 3M 5200 sealant. Through-bolted with 18 – 3/4 inch stainless steel J-bolts incorporating stainless steel backing plates.

Deck to Hull: Mechanically joined with through-bolts and bedded with 3M 5200 sealant.

Floor Timbers/Engine Beds: Fiberglass laminated over high-density structural foam, sealed and finished with isophthalic gelcoat.

Bulkheads: Bonded with fiberglass to hull and deck with tie plates to floor stuctures.

Furniture: All horizontal and vertical flats fiberglass bonded to hull and deck.

Chainplates: Stainless steel with backing plates through-bolted to solid fiberglass structural knees.

Hull Insulation: 1/2 inch closed cell foam interior insulation from the waterline to the sheer to prevent condensation and provide thermal and acoustic insulation.

Engine Room Insulation: One inch Sound Stop lined foam throughout to provide thermal and acoustic insulation.

Top Sides: Finished with Imron polyurethane white hull with contrasting whale and double boot for superior finish, mar resistance and color retention.

Underbody: Barrier coating first applied below the waterline, followed by marine anti-fouling bottom paint.

Interior

Bulkheads: Varnished cherry wood

Trim: Sea rails and fiddles on all horizontal surfaces, laminated trim pieces on all arch door frames and cap bulkheads.

Hull Sideliner: Horizontal ash ceiling battens screwed and plugged with Satin Urethane finish.

Cabin Sole: Planked and plugged 1/2 inch solid teak with inlaid basswood strips on top of 3/4 inch marine grade plywood sub-floor. Sole lift-outs have mechanical locking devices.

Cabin Sole Finish: Sanded and sealed with three coats of Satin Urethane finish.

Cabin Sides: Handrails on cabin trunk sides, with Formica side liner.

Lockers: Isolated from bilge with vents for maximum air circulation.

Twist Latches: Flush-mounted on all opening locker doors and drawers.

Drawers: Solid cherry face with cedar bottoms and dovetail side connections, mounted on epoxy-coated drawer slides.

Dining Table: Walk around drop-leaf table with cherry wood top and center storage. Formica leaves with fiddles. Table is through-bolted to floor timbers.

Settees: Opposing settees port and starboard. Storage lockers behind settee backs and a cabinet above the port and starboard settee.
